With the permission of the mods, I'm going to attempt semi-weekly open threads for some time, to see if we can get some discussion going back in this lovely group.

Today's open thread is about Halloween. Do you like it? Do you dislike it? What do you like or dislike about it? Do you live somewhere where it's not celebrated?

I'm not a big fan of dressing up myself. It hits my embarrassment squick. I also don't like the emphasis on sexy costumes for adults or costumes that mock minority/marginalized groups. I'm supposed to wear a costume at work for the week before Halloween for a fundraiser we're doing for a children's hospital charity. Fortunately I have some tiger and snow leopard ear headbands I can tolerate wearing.

I do like autumn/harvest decorations and cute monsters. I have a book of crochet patterns for cute amigurumi monsters ("Creepy Cute Crochet" by Christen Haden) that I want to make eventually.

I like Halloween, though I'm not terribly invested in it. I love dressing up, but ... idk, I usually can't be bothered with anything but what my family drags me into. I'm having fun planning with my foster-sister though.

I loooooove Halloween, though that may be because up until last year I always invited my friends over and made everyone dress up. :D (I also love dressing up. A lot. *g*) This year everyone's scattered all over the place, so no Halloween part for me, so... I'm not how much I'll enjoy it this year.

Not sure I'd like it as much if I lived in America, though. Because here in Europe the dressing up is still very much in the tradition of *scary* costumes, and usually just for kids. Doubt I'd be as happy if I kept seeing sexy (insert random thing here) costumes everywhere. :/

Well, where I grew up Halloween was never a really big thing... also the proliferation of culturally appropriative/sexist costumes right about now always bothers me.

But hey, all the candy goes on sale right after! Mmm. Cheap chocolate.

I am sad that all my costume-like garments are 300+ miles away from me, so I won't be able to dress up this year. :(

I love halloween, mostly as the excuse to dress even more ridiculously than usual. I'm going to be (a generous interpretation of) Alice in Wonderland this year, and next year after I move I have plots to be Wednesday Addams and my best friend will be Pugsley and we will be awesome.
